Speedrome Welcomes RoC Mods and NYSS for May 1st Opener, Announces Improvements
by Carol Houssock

All systems are ‘go’ for the 2016 season opener, despite the questionable departure of winter and the arrival of spring. We’ll be hosting two touring series events along with two of our regular divisions for the May 1st lid-lifter. Track management and personnel have also worked hard during the off-season to improve our state-of-the-art facility and race operations.

The first race on our 2016 schedule is a dandy. The 75 lap race for the Modifieds represents the second stop on the Ferris Mowers Race of Champions (RoC) Asphalt Tour. Last year Chuck Hossfeld got the win and said it was a deal where being in position to win paid off in a big way. With a car that he said was clearly not the fastest one on the track, he held off Andy Jankowiak and TJ Potrzebowski for that win. The series will be back on Hoosier tires, so team notes from last May could prove to be key.

The New York Super Stocks (NYSS) return as part of our opener, much to the delight of Tim Gullo. His opening round win at the Speedrome a year ago set the stage for what became a NYSS championship run. The race distance is 30 laps.INEX Legends and Bandoleros are also on the May 1st race card, with 20 and 8 lap features, respectively. A year ago Matt Kurzejewski and David French captured the two events.

This Saturday, April 30th, we’re holding a test and tune session starting at 12 PM. Race fans are encouraged to stop over and enjoy free admission to the grandstand.

Gates open at noon on Sunday for the season opener, with practice for all divisions kicking off at 1 PM. The first heat race will begin at 2:15 PM. Admission is $22 for adults, $20 for those ages 65 and older, $6 for kids ages 6-12, and free to children 5 and under.

Returning race teams and fans will notice some changes. Chemung now boasts the newest Mylaps scoring system, and drivers in all five regular divisions must now use transponders. This will provide the race teams and fans with the most accurate information.

“We’re adjusting our start time once we go to Friday nights (May 20th). We’ll be starting at 7 PM instead of 7:15,” stated owner John White. “This should help us avoid bumping up against our curfew.” We’re also slightly adjusting the weekly admission prices. “Adult admission is $13, and $11 for seniors 65+ in the grandstand. But if fans bring back their ticket stub from the prior week it’s worth $3 off for each, so the pricing nets out the same as last year,” White explained.
American Racer is now the official tire of the Speedrome, and tires are available at the track. Several veteran drivers praised this move as being much more affordable for them in the long run. Teams will be able to run them for three or four weeks versus one or two previously.

Tech is also beefed up and race teams in the INEX Legends and Bandoleros will have more eyes watching them. Following some off-season meetings/trainings in Charlotte and Orlando, both Chet Bennett and White are now licensed INEX tech inspectors.

Chemung personnel were busy engaging more of the business community in their operations.

Comfort Inn on 2160 Elmira Street in Sayre, PA is now the official lodging of Chemung Speedrome. They will offer special pricing for racers and fans for the next three years. And Culligan is the official water softener at the track.

Announcer Carol Houssock is pleased that Buffalo Wild Wings in Horseheads, NY will be back with the popular “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner” bonus for feature winners in the 3 NASCAR divisions. The restaurant has also expanded our Home Team Advantage program to a year-round, whereby guests present a card that translates into money for the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers.

These improvements go along with the excitement of opening day this Sunday, May 1st. Don’t forget – we’re quiet on Mother’s Day, but we’ll roars back into action on Sunday, May 15th at 2:15 PM. That will be the first time all five regular divisions (Sunoco Modifieds, Super Stocks, 4 Cylinders, INEX Legends and Bandoleros) will be in competition this year. Race time is 2:15 PM. It will then be a short turnaround leading to week number 3, with racing under the lights on Friday, May 20th at 7 PM.
