Chemung to Try Again: Opener Now May 13th
by Carol Houssock
Despite having a rain date for the scheduled season opener,
it wasn’t to be at Chemung Speedrome. The persistent, and
sometimes heavy, rain made the decision to bail an easy one
for track management. What isn’t easy is rescheduling the
touring Race of Champions modifieds and the NYSS series, and
they have not been rescheduled as of press time.
Momentum now builds for the delayed opener, which will now showcase the
track’s five regular divisions with a twin bill for the
headline NASCAR Sunoco Modifieds. They will run a pair of
20-lap features while the NASCAR Super Stocks, NASCAR 4
Cylinders, INEX Legends and Bowen Racecars Bandoleros will
also be in action for regular distance events.
It remains to be seen how many of the 2016 track champions will return to
defend their titles. Last year’s champs included TJ
Zacharias (Sunoco Modifieds), Nick Robinson (Super Stocks),
Monica Green (4 Cylinders), Alexandria Smith (INEX Legends),
and both Garrett Zacharias and Bryce Bailey (Bandoleros).
Green and Smith had said at the January banquet that they
were contemplating either not running for points or doing
something different this year. Regardless, there will be
plenty of talent on hand based on off-season chatter and
public appearances. Several drivers are moving up to another
class, while others are moving in or coming out of
‘retirement’ to compete at the legendary Speedrome.
Pits will open one hour earlier (3 PM) than they will in subsequent weeks
to accommodate race teams for opening day. The grandstand
gate will open at 5 PM and practice will get underway at 5
as well. The first green flag will fly at 6 PM. While the
Speedrome reverts to its familiar Saturday night race date
this season, the race time is now one hour earlier so fans
should plan accordingly for the 6 PM start.
